Our animals are very special and many live here because of injury, illness, human socialization, or other issues that make them unreleasable to the wild.
While all enclosures have been specially designed to meet the natural needs of the species as well as to accommodate any physical limitations of the individual animal, animals need novel experiences to use their natural instincts on a regular basis. This is called “enrichment” and it is a regular part of good husbandry (care of animals by humans). At the EcoTarium, we provide enrichment to our mammals at least once a day; our birds of prey, reptiles and amphibians once or twice a week.
Just as you enrich your pet’s lives with new toys, healthy food treats, and puzzle feeders, our keepers provide our wildlife with something new and different to interact with. This keeps their brains stimulated and their bodies active. Some of our enrichment tactics include hiding food in toys or other materials. The animal must practice its foraging skills to find the food. Other enrichment items stimulate their senses with new sights, smells, or textures; or encourage chasing, swimming, or jumping..
You can support the variety of our enrichment program by purchasing items from our Amazon Wish List and we will get your items to our wildlife.
If you are a regular shopper on Amazon.com, be sure to sign into AmazonSmile before you begin shopping! The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate a percentage of purchases made by shoppers signed up for this great program. You can select the EcoTarium as the charity of your choice to donate to by adding us under our official name of Worcester Natural History Society.
