JASON X: Rainforests -- A Wet and Wild Adventure
In the 1998-1999 school year the EcoTarium participated in the JASON Project as a PINS (Primary Interactive Network Site) for JASON Project X: Rainforests -- A Wet and Wild Adventure. Dr Bob Ballard and his team of scientists explored rainforests at three locations:
- temperate rainforests in Hoh River Valley in the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State;
- fossil rainforests in Castle Rock, Colorado; and
- tropical rainforests in Peru at the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research (ACEER).
Student Argonauts joined with Dr. Ballard and his scientists as they investigated the changes that have taken place over time and how these changes affect living systems. The two-week expedition to ACEER took place March 1-12, 1999. On Monday through Saturday the first week and Monday through Friday the second week EcoTarium received five live interactive satellite broadcasts daily. Through this experience of "telepresence" students participated in the explorations of the scientists and argonauts.
The JASON Project is a year-long experience and has many aspects:
- An award winning Curriculum you can use in your classroom and for years to come;
- Team JASON Online;
- JASON X Expedition Prologue Video;
- Local Field Studies; and
- Live, interactive satellite broadcasts in March, 1999.
Teachers from around Massachusetts joined us for the JASON X
Teacher Workshops here at EcoTarium to become familiar with this
year's curriculum and to learn about all the aspects of JASON Project
X. We have provided several options to accomodate various schedules,
including full-day and split-day workshops.
The EcoTarium will not be hosting JASON broadcasts in the 1999-2000 school year due to construction; we are in the process of building an exciting new computer and telecommunications theater!
