Secrets of the Forest
There are many types of animals hidden throughout New England's forests.
Trees, toadstools, fungi are other types of life that are easy to spot as you walk through a wooded area. As you poke around the EcoTarium's indoor forest, you'll discover that dead trees are just as important as the ones that are alive. You'll see the many creatures that rely on trees (dead and alive), on the forest floor, and on each other.
Join museum staff for special programs inside this indoor forest. Unlike the forests in your neighborhood, this one has plenty of comfortable places to sit... (and some suprises lurking in the benches).
Secrets of the Forest is a living exhibit...
Scientists are working hard to catalog and record all of the species of animals in the world. On our Taxonomy Wall, find out how scientists classify these species. You might even try your hand at taxonomy and sort New England owls on your own.
Lift up the doors along a log to reveal which animals might be spied in and around logs. These animals help with the cycle of decomposition that creates the dirt on the floor of the forest.
Peek through the view tubes at the Tree Island to learn more about the past, present and future of some of New England's familiar and not-so-familiar animals.
Wood turtles are an animal you may have seen in the forest. Come visit them in their new habitat.
