Playing Together: Games
Saturday, 1/14/2012 - Sunday, 9/9/2012
- $14 - adults, $8 children - ages 2-18, $10 - seniors (65+) and students
Play King Tut's favorite game of Senet. Challenge a friend to a game of Skittles or Mancala. Checkmate your opponent on a giant chessboard with huge game pieces. Try out a multitude of games that span generations and cultures in Playing Together: Games, a special hands-on exhibit that explores the imaginative ways people have invented to play together through games. The exhibit includes fourteen games of strategy, math, luck, and physical coordination from around the world.

Preschool and Toddler Wednesdays

Young children have their very own space -- and educational programming -- at the EcoTarium!

Every Wednesday enjoy a story, meet a live animal, and get creative with a supervised craft activity -- all geared especially for little ones, aged 3 and under. The story and animal circle is held at 10:30 and 11 a.m. Drop-in craft time continues from 10:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m.

These preschool and toddler programs are very popular and space is limited. So, while they are free with admission, tickets are issued at the Information Desk on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that these programs are designed for families.

Boys Night Out

- $50 per person. Reservations required.
Spend a starry "boys only" night at the EcoTarium. Sleep among the exhibits and enjoy a fun-filled overnight working on an astronomy-themed scout badge or just learning about the stars and planets. Includes guided activities, digital planetarium space travel and night sky explorations (telescopes if weather permits). One chaperone per 10 scouts. Individual children must be accompanied by an adult. Program fee also includes child's pass for a daytime return visit.

It's Electric! - School Vacation Activities

- Free with museum admission
Spark up vacation week by exploring electricity in technology and biology -- because you're electric, too! Experiment and play with Snap Circuits, swap "electrons" as a human copper atom, learn about electronics you can wear, and make a wearable wrist cuff that lights up (small materials fee required).

Snap Circuits and wrist cuff activities will be offered daily from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Other activities and demonstrations will be scheduled throughout each day.

In addition, a 19th-century Peas Work construction activity will be ongoing throughout each day.

Budding Scientists: Solutions, Mixtures & Suspensions

In this monthly program, curious little scientists explore the natural world and learn basic scientific principles. Each interactive session includes simple and safe science and nature experiments designed to stimulate and engage young minds.

In March, our budding scientists will ask the question what dissolves in water and what doesn't. They'll experiment with some safe substances to learn why and how.

Budding Scientists is designed for families and their children aged 4-6. You bring the curiosity, we'll provide the smocks. This is active and interactive science, so children may get messy.

There are two identical, half hour sessions held on the first Thursday of each month. The first begins at 10:15 a.m., and the second begins at 11:00 a.m. Each session is limited to the first 10 adult-child pairs. Please pick up a ticket for your session at the Information Desk when you arrive at the museum.

Reptile Adaptations/Home School Program

- $35 per child, $25 for EcoTarium members
Created especially for home schooling families, this 90-minute class is designed for children ages 6-12 and is taught by an EcoTarium educator. Children will participate in learning groups of ages 6-8 and ages 9-12.

Reptiles were roaming our planet before the dinosaurs and they still live successfully in many parts of the world. While observing live reptiles, kids learn about these animals strategies for evolutionary success and their prospects for the future.

Class is limited to 15 participants. Advance registration is required.

Birds: Modern Day Dinosaurs/Home School Program

Created expecially for home schooling families, this 90-minutes class is designed for chldren ages 6-12 and is taught by an EcoTarium educator. Children will participate in learning groups of ages 6-8 and ages 9-12.

Kids will learn about the raptors (birds of prey) that live right here in New England and compare them to the parrots found in tropical regions. How have birds adapted to fit in to unique habitat niches? What is their evolutionary background? They discover how birds come to live at the EcoTarium and how are they cared for while they live here.

Earth Day Festival

The EcoTarium's annual Earth Day celebration includes activities and programs, family entertainment, and many vendors of environmentally-friendly foods, products and services, as well as all of the regular museum attractions: the indoor and outdoor exhibits, Explorer Express Train, and digital planetarium shows. Admission is half price for everyone. Regular train and planetarium fees apply.

Budding Scientists: Playing with Polymers

EcoTarium: A Night at the Museum

In a take-off of the popular 2006 film, starring Ben Stiller, exhibits will “come to life,” historical figures from Worcester, the world of science, and the EcoTarium’s nearly 200-year past will pay a visit, and hidden treasures from the museum’s collection will make an appearance.

While discovering these after-hours surprises, party guests will also enjoy cocktails, hors de’oeuvres, musical entertainment, a moonlight train ride, games, and silent auction. Tickets are $35 per person for EcoTarium members and $40 per person for non-members. Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling 508-929-2700.
