Naturalist Program

feeding the porcupine

The Naturalist Program is a volunteer position that allows students between the ages of fourteen and eighteen the opportunity to work with EcoTarium’s wild residents. Under the instruction of wildlife staff, Naturalists are taught basic animal care techniques, such as cage cleaning, handling, restraint, diet preparation, record keeping, house keeping, enrichment* and medical administration.

Naturalists are responsible for most of the animals in our collection, including small mammals, birds of prey, parrots, lizards, snakes, turtles, amphibians, arthropods, invertebrates and fish. Although they also have the opportunity to assist wildlife staff in feeding and enriching some of the more high maintenance animals in our collection, including the Bald Eagles, River Otters and Polar Bear!

This program can often be a first introduction for students into a work environment. It promotes teamwork, encourages responsibility and leadership, and develops communication and interpersonal skills. The knowledge and experience gained as a Naturalist can be valuable in future careers, is very rewarding and a lot of fun!

*Animals that live in captivity aren't challenged by their environments like their wild counterparts. Enrichment--introducing a new item or event--provides that challenge and stimulates natural behavior.
